BetweenTheLines Theatre is a contemporary theatre company devoted to telling stories that are true to us today. With a simple aesthetic, and unapologetically challenging content, we seek to cultivate empathy, reify listening, reflect humanity and present raw, fundamentally theatrical productions grown in the Missoula valley.

Building bridges with other companies nationally and internationally, BTL Theatre seeks to connect with our rapidly changing global culture through the transmission of ideas and creative modalities.

BetweenTheLines Theatre is fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas.

Founded in the spring of 2016 as an excuse to mount a site-specific production of Annie Baker’s The Flick at The Roxy Theater in Missoula, BetweenTheLines was then housed there for the last three seasons. In an attempt to get back in touch with the core inspiration, BetweenTheLines looks forward to producing work in a variety of venues.

Artistic Director. Founder. Producer.
Mason Wagner began creating work under the BetweenTheLines moniker while he was finishing his BFA in Acting at the University of Montana. His love for Nature and open spaces brought him from his home in Upstate New York to the Mountain West. He frequently collaborated with the Montana Repertory Theatre during his undergraduate tenure (Nat’l Tours of The Great Gatsby and All My Sons), becoming eligible for Equity Membership, but maintained a strong tie to the Missoula Valley.

After a sold-out run of The Flick, the inaugural BetweenTheLines production, Mason heeded the call for more challenging, independent theatre in Missoula. He has since produced ten new and/or critically-acclaimed contemporary scripts.

With BTL, Mason has directed The Flick, Constellations, Stupid F*cking BirdDanny and the Deep Blue Sea, In The Snow [World Premiere] (AD), and The Buffalo Play. He assistant directed the 2019 tour of the Dirty Sexy Chocolate Show. He directed a regional touring production of 1984 adapted for the stage by Michael Gene Sullivan (Pendragon Theatre). And collaborated internationally with the Moradokmai Theatre School in Thailand on a deconstruction of HamletDenmark is a Prison.
He recently trained with SITI Company during their 25th annual Summer Intensive.
Regional acting credits include national tours of The Great Gatsby and All My Sons (Montana Repertory Theatre); The Aliens4000 Miles (BetweenTheLines); Look Back In Anger (Roothead Studio) and PVT. Wars (Montana Rep’s Visions and Voices).

Mason has also taught privately contracted acting lessons, and led workshops in the US and abroad.
